Welcome to the It List Winter Guide, where we share our picks for the best in entertainment. Catch the weekly It List here for the latest releases that we can’t wait to watch, stream, listen to, read and binge.
After airing a few episodes during the fall TV season, many shows slip into hibernation over the holidays, only to be revived in the early months of the new year. From new shows like the head-spinning Doctor Odyssey to returning classics like Grey’s Anatomy, many series will pick up again in 2025 with shocking storylines and fresh new guest stars.
There are a lot of shows to weed through, so Yahoo Entertainment made a list of new and returning series that have unfinished business to attend to (or unseen episodes to air). And get your calendars ready — we locked down return and premiere dates for as many popular series as possible.
New series returning to finish the 1st season
Our pick: High Potential
-
When: High Potential returns Jan. 7 on ABC.
-
What to know: Kaitlin Olson stars as a single mom with an outrageously high IQ who is working as a cleaner at the Los Angeles Police Department when she inadvertently discovers she has a knack for solving crime and starts consulting on murder cases.
-
Why you should be watching: The show puts a refreshing and heartfelt twist on police procedurals, and audience members get to solve the crime along with the characters. It immediately became a hit, and only seven episodes have aired so far (including its shocking midseason finale), so catching up won’t be a chore.
Other return dates:
Happy’s Place — NBC, Jan 3

Long-running series with a brand-new season
Our pick: Yellowjackets
-
When: Yellowjackets Season 3 premieres Feb. 14 on Paramount+.
-
What to know: The show follows members of a high school soccer team who survived in the wilderness for 19 months — and flashes forward 25 years to show where they are today. Violence, chaos and occult activity persist in both timelines.

Tried-and-true series picking up midseason
Our pick: 9-1-1
-
When: 9-1-1 returns for Season 7B March 6 on ABC.
-
What to know: Angela Bassett, Peter Krause and Jennifer Love Hewitt star in this series, which follows the high-octane experiences of first responders, from firefighters and paramedics to police officers and 911 operators. That includes their professional and personal lives, of course.
-
Why you should be watching: This season premiered with a three-episode arc about a “bee-nado,” which is as over-the-top and campy as it sounds, but it still somehow exceeds all expectations. You’ll never know what will happen in this show — all of its characters have almost died at least once, and everyone has a love interest — and that’s what makes it so gripping.
Other return dates:
Lopez vs. Lopez — Season 3B, NBC, Jan. 3
Abbott Elementary — Season 3B, ABC, Jan. 8

Reality competition shows back with a new batch of contestants
Our pick: The Traitors
-
When: The Traitors Season 3 premieres Jan. 9 on Peacock.
-
What to know: Alan Cumming hosts a murder mystery competition show that sees celebrities working together to earn cash prizes, then sniffing out the “traitors” who are “killing” them off behind closed doors.
-
Why you should be watching: The cast is absolutely stacked this season: Where else could you see Bob the Drag Queen, Chrishell Stause, Sam Asghari and Tom Sandoval trapped in a castle conspiring against each other?! Probably some other reality show, but this one is coming soon.
Other return dates:
The Voice — Season 26B, NBC, Feb. 3

New-ish shows returning for Season 2
Our pick: Severance
-
When: Severance returns Jan. 17 on Apple TV+.
-
What to know: The mind-bending series follows corporate employees who have undergone a procedure that severs their work persona and memories from those of their “outtie.”
-
Why you should be watching: The first season ended on a massive cliffhanger in April 2022, so it’s about time we get some answers — and maybe some more questions. Director Ben Stiller said it was “worth it” to endure so many delays and reshoots. I trust him.
Other return dates:
