This was a game that the Canucks dominated from an analytics perspective. At even strength, they held a 30-15 scoring chances advantage while also winning the high-danger scoring chances battle 14-2. In the end, though, they weren’t able to capitalize on their opportunities as they ended up falling once again in overtime.
The biggest takeaway from the heatmap was how Vancouver was able to keep the guts of the ice clean. While the Red Wings did create some chances, including the game-winner, which was scored off a one-timer, the Canucks played strong defensively throughout the night. As mentioned, though, they need to find a way to put the puck in the net, especially as they were able to create a handful of Grade A chances.
As for Vancouver’s top forward line, that would be the trio of Dakota Joshua, Filip Chytil and Conor Garland. During their 15:25 of ice time, the Canucks second line held a 7-3 shots advantage while winning the high-danger scoring chances battle 4-0. While it is only one game, this trio showed they have some chemistry as they were able to spend the majority of the night in the offensive zone.
To wrap things up, one player who stood out was defenceman Elias Pettersson. During his 16:10 of even-strength ice time, Vancouver held a 14-2 shots advantage, while Pettersson finished with an xGF% of 93.65. Ultimately, it was a special night for the 20-year-old as he picked up his first career point while showing he can be an impactful defender at the NHL level.
