The surprising household item that attracts spiders into your home

With autumn just around the corner, spider season is almost here, as the creepy crawlies come in, looking for somewhere to shelter from cooler climes.

In fact, the average person will be sharing their home with around 50 of these eight-legged creepy crawlies in the Autumn months as they look for shelter and food according to experts.

In the past week, google searches have skyrocketed on how to get rid of spiders but what is it that’s bringing them in in the first place?

James Sheldon, owner of Online Sofa shop has shared the most unexpected reason for why spiders may be more attracted to your home and it’s something we are all likely to find in our house if we looked hard enough: crumbs in your sofa.

He explained: “Spiders are often drawn to your home due to the presence of insects that they need to consume to survive. Crumbs and other food remnants can slip into the crevices of your sofa, becoming a food source for any insects they attract.

“Spiders are carnivorous and like to be in warm spaces and are likely to seek out food sources like insects and shelter in your home. The small crevices and cracks in or around your sofa are a haven for spiders as they follow their prey.”

Many who are scared of the often harmless creatures will be wondering what they can do to prevent the presence of spiders in their sofas and James luckily has a few tips.

He recommends vacuuming any loose crumbs and dusting off the sofa to help deter insects and spiders.

He added that regularly cleaning your sofa should also help as he said: “To prevent your sofa from becoming a hotbed for insects and spiders, vacuum it weekly to remove dust and crumbs and treat spills and stains as soon as they happen to prevent them from sitting in.”

For keeping spiders out of not only our settees but just our homes in general, here’s what else he recommends.

How to deter spiders from your house:

  • Use caulk to seal entry points: Seal any gaps or cracks around your windows and door using caulk, weather stripping or sealant, which helps to block off entry points for spiders.

  • Spray peppermint oil: Spiders are repelled by peppermint smells as it affects their ability to detect smells and vibrations. Spray a mixture of peppermint oil and water around your windows and doorframes to keep spiders at bay.

  • Try a vinegar solution: Vinegar and water solutions also work well to drive spiders away. Simply mix equal parts water and vinegar and spray it in corners and crevices. This method also doubles as a repellent for ants, further deterring spiders from seeking out insects.”

  • Create a paste using citrus fruit: Spiders dislike the smell of citrus fruits like lemons, oranges and grapefruits. Blend any leftover fruit with water to create a past which you can apply to windowsills or areas where spiders commonly linger.

  • Clean regularly: Regularly cleaning your home will help keep spiders away in general. Hoovering away cobwebs at windows and other areas where spiders gather will help. You can also use a damp cloth and a mild cleaner to wipe down surfaces, ensuring you remove any lingering webs and prevent new ones from forming.
