There’s still time for holiday activities

Yes, we’ve officially celebrated Christmas but that doesn’t mean the season doesn’t continue. With children out of school, many on vacation and formal gatherings out of the way, the community has a chance to enjoy a few more seasonal activities before the new year.

Christmas at the Depot: The Christmas trees are still on full display at the Shafter Depot Museum. The longtime tradition continues with trees decorated by local families and organizations. This year’s theme is the “Lights of Christmas.”

Along with holiday fun earlier this month, visitors to the museum were able to vote for their favorite trees. The voting continues this weekend before the winners are announced on Jan. 4.

Christmas at the Depot runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the museum, 150 North Central Valley Highway in Shafter. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.

Menorah lighting: On Sunday, The Marketplace and The Chabad Jewish Community Center will celebrate the fifth night of Hanukkah with the annual menorah lighting.

On Dec. 29, the annual tradition returns to the southwest shopping center.

This community celebration of the Festival of Lights will include the lighting followed by Hanukkah dreidels and treats, live music and sufganiyot (Hanukkah doughnuts).

The ceremony begins at 5 p.m. Sunday in the courtyard at the shopping center, 9000 Ming Ave.

Bakersfield Christmas Town: The popular walk-thru and drive-thru experience continues its run at the Kern County Fairgrounds.

In the mystical wonderland of lights and displays, guests can drive through lighted tunnels, visit the Snowman Family, and see the Gingerbread Men fall into the Abdominal Snowman’s mouth

Enjoy a skating rink, visits with Santa, Rudolph’s Bounce Zone, festive light displays, food and much more.

The event runs through Tuesday, with hours from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 5:30 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the fairgrounds, 1142 S. P St.

HolidayLights: This annual holiday display at California Living Museum will finish the season strong with shows nightly through Jan. 4.

Enjoy free crafts, purchase apple or peach dumplings and snacks from Teen Challenge, meet Santa and take in the display with more than 3 million lights.

On Tuesday, CALM will host a New Year’s Eve Extravaganza on Dec. 31 with music by Mento Buru.

Guests can take part in an East Coast countdown at 9 p.m. before heading off to other celebrations.

The cost is $28; $23 seniors, military, CALM members; $17 for children ages 3 to 11; and free for children 2 and younger.

Hours are 5:30 to 9 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays, 5:30 to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through Jan. 4 at CALM, 10500 Alfred Harrell Highway.

Admission is $18; $15 for CALM members, seniors, military and children ages 3 to 11; $13 for children ages 3 to 11 with a member; free for children 2 and younger. Tickets are available at calmholidaylights.org.

“Anastasia: The Musical”: The Empty Space unravels the mystery of the Romanov family with a girl who could be royalty in this musical based on the 1997 animated film.

Remaining performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday, which was added after the 8 p.m. closing performance sold out.

All shows are at the theater, 5417 Woodmere Drive.
