This downtown Corpus Christi music-and-food venue may look very different in the next year

A longtime staple of Corpus Christi’s downtown could take on a significantly new look within the next year, if all goes as proposed.

House of Rock — a combination restaurant and bar that also operates as a music and entertainment venue — is planning an exterior renovation estimated at about $184,000, according to a presentation shown Tuesday before a city board that oversees downtown tax incentives.

Included in the plans are new windows and repairs to the exterior stucco walls, as well as a new sign and awnings, the PowerPoint slide presentation shows.

Currently, one of House of Rock’s most recognizable emblems is a large mural of a rooster outside its doors.

It’s “a well-known and well-loved establishment in the downtown area,” said Downtown Management District Executive Director Alyssa Barrera Mason, addressing city officials.

A city memo said House of Rock first opened in 2005 and is “known for showcasing local, regional and national talent in their venue while also being a family friendly food establishment for lunch and dinner.”

In part, the renovation will upgrade “the front entrance to their venue to accommodate for their performing artist equipment needs,” it states.

The board on Tuesday unanimously approved tax incentives of about $80,000 for the exterior renovation.

The funding is drawn from tax increments collected in the downtown area and may only be used for investment in the same area it is collected.
