A convicted domestic abuser has been jailed after harassing two women at the same time.

Brian Ogden, 37, claimed it was his issues with alcohol that affected his behaviour, but a judge told him: “It is very much you.”

Ogden, of Oldham, pleaded guilty to stalking involving fear of violence, criminal damage and putting a person in fear of violence. Minshull Street Crown Court heard that he had repeatedly messaged the two women after being handed court orders not to contact them both.

Prosecutor Lisa Boocock said that Ogden and the first complainant had been in a long-term relationship, and shared children together.

However, when the relationship began to break down, the woman went to the family court and obtained a non-molestation order lasting five years.

“This is a very long order for that court to issue,” Ms Boocock said.

On Ogden’s release from prison on a separate matter, he immediately began to message the woman, asking to see the children.

“Unfortunately, because he was in breach of the order, she suggested that they should use the proper channels; social services,” the prosecutor continued. “He became annoyed and said if she would not allow him to see his children, he would come to her house and kill her.”

Over the next few days he showed up at her house, as seen on her Ring doorbell, and repeatedly knocked on the door before trying to post something through her sealed letterbox. He later returned and stole the doorbell.

Ogden also called her and said: “This is it for you now, I will make sure you never see the kids and the police won’t catch me.”

Later she heard banging coming from outside her house and saw Ogden arguing with somebody. He then picked up a bin and threw it at her bedroom window causing it to smash.

She called the police and whilst waiting for them to arrive she received numerous calls from Ogden who said: “I’m gonna stab you up.”

In a statement, the woman said: “This is never ending and I’m having to move all the time. He is terrorising me personally, and I see no end.”

The woman, who watched the proceedings over videolink, added in a further statement: “It’s hard to describe but my brain feels numb, and when I try to remember things that happened I feel an uncomfortable pressure in the back of my head.

“It is impossible to describe how overwhelming it is to be with Brian. I felt empathy, heartbroken, suicidal and worthless and in love at the same time.

“Brian, I hope you are listening to everything I have said about how the things you have done have affected me and the children.”

The court heard that around the same time Ogden was harassing another woman. Due to his behaviour she had sought a restraining order and a non molestation order to protect herself, Ms Boocock said.

Breaching the orders, Ogden messaged her on Facebook, initially saying that his brother had died.

She was then bombarded with abuse, as he called her a ‘grass’ and accused all her family members of being ‘paedophiles’. In a number of abusive calls he called her names and stating he was going to ‘send a couple of scousers to her house’.

“In another message he said there was £50,000 on her head, and he would ‘rather do it himself but some smackhead was going to do it’,” Ms Boocock said.

“He continued: “Drop the charges or you’re dead”, “I have got half of Oldham looking for you”. The defendant also sent her a video of himself with a large knife and said: “I’m tooled up me fam. I’m ready, time for someone to die.”

The woman genuinely believed she was going to be harmed, the court heard.

The messages continued with Ogden stating he would ‘do life for ending her’ and she feared he would go to her family’s address.

In a statement, she said: “My children have had to have counselling due to his behaviour. I’m scared of what he will do to me – I’m on eggshells and I can’t sleep knowing he is out.”

The court heard that Ogden had 11 years worth of domestic violence offences on his record including putting a person in fear of violence, criminal damage and breaching numerous court orders.

Michael James, mitigating for Ogden, said: “The defendant asked me to point out that the relationship had been on and off and he spent some time in relationships with other people. He accepts he is not a good partner and his conduct in a relationship is poor.”

Mr James said the offences were committed whilst Ogden was drinking, and stated he had alcohol issues. He added that he had a difficult upbringing and witnessed domestic abuse in his childhood.

Jailing Ogden, of Union Street, Oldham, for 38 months, Judge Jonathan Seely said: “These offences were appalling and you have a bad criminal record for offences of this sort.

“You seem to care absolutely not a jot. You seem to harass and make the lives of these women miserable. The court will not tolerate such behaviour

“You say: ‘It’s not me, it’s someone else’. You’re wrong, it is you, it is very much you.”
