Inmates spending Christmas Day in Welsh prisons will be tucking into special festive menus on December 25 and while there is plenty of turkey on the menu there are some more fancy options too. There are currently more than 5,000 prisoners in the six jails in Wales – HMP Swansea, HMP Cardiff, HMP Parc in Bridgend, HMP Berwyn in Wrexham, and HMP Usk and its satellite open prison HMP Prescoed, both of which are near Pontypool. All the prisons in Wales are for male inmates as there is no women’s facility in the country.
We asked the Ministry of Justice and the private firm G4S, which operates Parc prison, for details of what prisoners in Welsh jails will be eating on December 25. Each prison offers its own menu to its inmates and while there is plenty of traditional turkey and Christmas pudding on offer for Christmas dinner there are alternatives such as a beef and suet bake, smoked haddock and mozzarella patties with homemade tartare sauce, and vegetable wellington. Here is what inmates in Welsh prisons will be eating on Wednesday. For the latest court and crime news sign up to our crime newsletter here.
