It’s not everyday that you see a home with a Hocus Pocus-themed movie theater, or a bathroom filled with memorabilia from the iconic slasher film, “Friday the 13th.”
But at 157 Sooy Place Road in Tabernacle, that’s exactly what you’ll find.
Listed by Michele Harker of Coldwell Banker Realty earlier this month, the home is on the market for $562,000. This four-bedroom, two-bathroom split-level home has 2,808 square feet of living space on an acre lot. The property has an open floor plan, an abundance of natural light, a kitchen with modern appliances, a sunroom and a balcony that overlooks the home’s spacious backyard.
This Burlington County home was recently featured on Zillow Gone Wild — an Instagram page dedicated to highlighting unique, and sometimes crazy, home listings across the country — for the creative room designs featured in the property’s listing photos.
These creations were the passion project of owner Autumn Meadows, who used the home as her canvas. She said that during her struggles with rheumatoid arthritis and other health conditions, her time has been dedicated to make her home a unique and fun environment.
“I know it’s not for everybody,” she said. “One thing led to another and I just had nothing but time to sit and paint and sculpt and just do things to try and make the house fun. Ever since my kids were little, we used to do a big walk through with all the different themes.”
Meadows said that developing different themes throughout her home initially started as a way to help raise money for their local no-kill shelter. Prior to the pandemic, she said they would hold fundraisers where people could donate and tour the uniquely-designed spaces in her home.
They would do another design in different parts of the home each year to keep people coming back, and all of the money raised would go towards purchasing supplies for the shelter, she said.
Over time, Meadows and her husband started decorating different bedrooms in their home as a way for them to feel like they’re on vacation. She said they did this because it’s too difficult for her to travel, so this was their way of bringing the vacations into their home.
“I have a hard time walking, so going on vacation isn’t an option anymore,” she said. “Because of the medications I’m on, I can’t go to the beach because of the sun. So we did a beach-themed guest room so we could go and spend the weekend in that room. And we have a cabin that we used to go to with family when our kids were younger, so we created the cabin room because we can’t travel too far with me.”
Similarly, Meadows said she’s Irish and has always wanted to go visit Ireland. So her husband ended up putting a mural of Ireland in one of the rooms as a way for her to feel like she’s visiting.
As for their Hocus Pocus-themed movie theater, she said their inspiration for this actually came from the three dogs they had at the time. Each one had red, blonde or brunette-colored fur and she hung a painting of them in costume as the Sanderson sisters over the fireplace, she said, and designed the whole room around it.
At one point in time, Meadows also had a goal for her home to be featured in Weird NJ. She said they had plans to create a Snow White scene in one of the bedrooms, with a Snow White-themed house and stairs.
“We had one room where we were going to try to do that, where the tree is,” she said. “We had three great big dogs and one was gonna lay on top, and she passed away as soon as we got the wood and we had all the plans drawn up. She passed away a couple of weeks before we started, so we didn’t have the heart to go through with that. So it’s just a tree in there now.
And while all of these different designs are pictured in the property’s listing photos, Meadows said there were actually many more creations throughout the home that they’ve covered up in anticipation of selling their property.
“I had painted a medieval mural with dragons and vines going up that long hallway, and it was all lit up with red velvet curtains,” she said. “We have kitty cats now, so we had a kitty cat room. I painted a big tree mural with each of the cats’ names down the rungs of the ladder. It was all 3D, but now that’s painted white.”
Overall, Meadows said they fully intended on staying in this home forever when they originally bought it in 2014. But as her health conditions have worsened, she said it’s better for them to move to a smaller, single-floor home. She said she has no plans to restart these designs in their new two-bedroom cabin in the mountains, so once they’re painted over in this Tabernacle home, they’ll be gone for good.
“She is so creative, and they’ve done it all by themselves. I just wish I had a little bit of her creativity,” Harker said.
