More than 36,000 Entergy customers woke up without power Sunday morning after a string of severe storms and tornadoes tore through Mississippi Saturday evening leaving one dead.
Jackson woke up to 55 degrees, headed to a high of 65 with partly sunny conditions expected according to the National Weather Service.
According to the NWS, 19 tornadoes were reported Saturday, mostly causing tree damage. But at least two homes were affected in the Jackson area. And farther South, near Bude and Meadville, Mississippi, Old Zion Baptist Church was destroyed, and a citizen was trapped in a nearby house.

The Natchez Democrat reported one fatality, a teenager, after a tree fell on a home.
Dime-sized hail was reported in the Jackson area.
Entergy reported 35,570 customers without power as of 6 a.m. Sunday. That total rose to 36,098 by 6:37 a.m. Of those, nearly 9,000 were in Hinds County. Around 1,300 were in Madison County, while around 3,900 were in Madison County, according to Entergy.
As of 6:15 a.m. Sunday, Mississippi Power reported only 34 outages in its coverage areas, which include Hattiesburg and Meridian.

How common are tornadoes in December in Mississippi?
December tornadoes are not terribly uncommon in the Magnolia State. In December of 2023, the NWS and NOAA reported only three tornadoes across the state, none greater than an EF-1. But in December of 2022, the NWS and NOAA reported 24 Mississippi tornadoes, including several in the Jackson and Hattiesburg areas.
