Thunderstorms expected throughout weekend

Aug. 16—The National Weather Service in Huntsville predicts isolated thunderstorms throughout the weekend for the north Alabama area, with some of the storms possibly approaching as early as Friday evening.

“It’s around a 60% chance of rain for Saturday and maybe a 40% chance for Sunday,” said meteorologist Dana Griffin. “We’re kind of in a pattern where we could see a few stronger storms. Usually at this time of the year they’ll produce big, strong, gusty winds, maybe some brief damaging winds, and maybe some small hail. The wind will be the main threat.”

Griffin said some stronger storms could appear in the north central and northeastern parts of the state after 7 p.m. on Friday but he does not believe they will be widespread.

“It’s pretty typical for this time of year,” Griffin said.
