Iowa could see some thunderstorms, hail and even snow amid severe storms sweeping the rest of the country throughout the week

A strong storm will move across the Pacific Coast starting Wednesday and impact nearly every region of the country. By Friday the storm will hit the central U.S.

Here's what the forecast looks like for Iowa.

There is a chance for thunderstorm activity Friday afternoon and severe weather could include damaging winds with large hail.

The area with the strongest likelihood for severe weather would be along and east of the Interstate 35 corridor, according to Jeff Zogg, National Weather Service Des Moines meteorologist. The most active weather is predicted for Friday afternoon and into the evening.

Since the storms are still a few days out, Zogg said there is room for variability in terms of the timing and the threats of the severe weather.

"Stay tuned to the latest forecast because there could be some changes to the area that is under the most threat as well as the kinds of weather we are expecting," Zogg said.

As the system pulls out, Zogg said Iowa could see some light snowfall Saturday afternoon. The Des Moines area likely won't see significant snow accumulations — only a possibilities of flurries, Zogg said.

Total precipitation in the Des Moines area could amount to 1/4 to 1/2 an inch. There will be higher amounts in northwest parts of the state. Northern Iowa could see 1 inch or more of rain. Even though the rain may dampen some St. Patrick's Day plans, Zogg said the moisture is welcomed considering the dryness in the northern part of the state.

Thunderstorms are expected to start after 1 p.m. Friday with a high of 77 degrees. There is a 60% chance of precipitation and it will be windy during the day.

Going into the evening there is a 90% chance of precipitation with a low of 39 degrees.

Saturday has a 40% chance of rain before 1 p.m. It will be partly sunny and windy with a high of 51 degrees.
