North Carolina’s status as a swing state means frequent presidential campaign visits. On Thursday, Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz travels to Durham. Drivers should give themselves extra time to get to their destinations today.
Walz, who is Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate and the governor of Minnesota, is flying in and out of Raleigh-Durham International Airport, known as RDU. The airport is in Morrisville.
Walz will be joined by former President Bill Clinton during his Durham visit.
We don’t have to stop for motorcades as much as Washington drivers yet, but with the start of early voting and just a few weeks until Election Day, Thursday will be a heavy traffic day. When an official travels in a motorcade, traffic is stopped in both directions for several vehicles to pass. Law enforcement may stop traffic at intersections or at exits on major roads.
Here’s what you can expect for traffic on Thursday:
▪ Walz will arrive at RDU at 2 p.m., so drivers can expect traffic on the surrounding roads soon after. Roads leading in and out of the airport area include Interstate 540 and Interstate 40.
▪ Walz has two campaign stops, and both are in Durham. The first is at 2:30 p.m. at an undisclosed location, and the second event, with Clinton, is at 3 p.m., also at an undisclosed location. Thursday is the first day of early voting in North Carolina.
▪ The campaign won’t announce the locations until they arrive for security reasons, so drivers should expect delays anywhere in the city. This is also a higher-traffic time of day because of schools letting out.
▪ At 6 p.m., Walz will arrive at his next campaign stop, starting at Smith Reynolds Airport in Winston-Salem. That means he will be leaving the Triangle before that, so expect traffic delays during rush hour between Durham and RDU.
After Winston-Salem, Walz will fly home to Minnesota.
