DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is hoping to help families caring for someone with dementia while celebrating Thanksgiving.
The foundation issued five tips that families can use to have a “dementia-friendly” Thanksgiving.
Families caring for a loved one with dementia deserve to join together and celebrate Thanksgiving, and there a few simple steps they can take to make that celebration as joyful as possible. For caregivers, it means creating an environment where our loved ones can feel safe, valued, and present in the moment. Being proactive and prepared are the best tools caregivers can use to give their loved one a Happy Thanksgiving.

Scheduling
The AFA says that families should consider hosting the celebration earlier in the day to avoid further agitating individuals living with dementia who are experiencing “sundown”. To that end, also consider planning the event around their routine.
Proper preparation
The AFA says that preparing your loved one with everyone invited to attend the celebration can help facilitate positive responses and engagement.
Involvement
The AFA says that it’s important to keep your loved one involved in festivities. Invite them to help cook a simple meal or to help set the table. These acts can go a long way in establishing a positive environment for them.
Make a quiet space
The AFA says that providing a quiet spot for your loved one, away from all of the festivities can prevent them from getting overwhelmed. In said space, make sure that there are comfort items available to them.
Plan for help
Don’t spread yourself to thin. Ask for help when you need it and remember that you’re not alone in your efforts to provide care for your loved one and putting on a good time.
