A North Carolina man is behind bars in South Carolina after he was arrested following a Wednesday traffic stop on Interstate 95, according to the Florence County Sheriff’s Office.
Bashiri Olugbala Powell isn’t locked up for committing a traffic violation. The 45-year-old Raleigh resident is being held at the Florence County Detention Center on a drug trafficking charge, jail records show.
Powell was charged with trafficking cocaine (400 grams or more), according to Florence County court records.
Powell was driving north on I-95 when he was pulled over by deputies near the 163 mile marker for two moving violations, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. Information about the specific moving violations was not available.
“During the stop, deputies developed reasonable suspicion that criminal activity was afoot,” and they searched the vehicle after a police dog alert, the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies found a kilogram of cocaine under the drivers seat, according to the release.
The street value of that amount of cocaine can be up to $150,000, according to estimates from the Guardian Recovery Network — an organization that treats alcohol and drug addiction.
Powell was booked at the Florence County Detention Center, the sheriff’s office said. No bond has been set for Powell, who remains locked up, according to jail records. He’s scheduled to appear in court again on Dec. 18, judicial records show.
If convicted on the felony drug trafficking charge, Powell faces a maximum punishment of 30 years in prison and a $200,000 fine, according to South Carolina law.
