(Bloomberg) -- Australia won’t be granted an exemption from steel and aluminum tariffs despite a lobbying campaign by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s government, in a blow to relations between the two longtime allies.

White House spokesman Kush Desai confirmed in a statement that the planned tariffs would come into effect from midnight on Wednesday, with no exemptions from any US trading partners.
Albanese, who must hold an election by May 17, has been under intense pressure from local lawmakers and executives to secure tariff exemptions for Australia’s steel and aluminum exports to the US. During Trump’s first term, Canberra undertook months of painstaking negotiations with Washington to avoid similar imposts.
White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt had earlier told reporters on Tuesday that President Donald Trump had decided against giving an exemption, despite previously telling Albanese he would consider it, according to Australian media reports.
“He considered it, and considered against it,” she told the Australian Broadcasting Corp., referring to Trump.
