Two CT men arrested as police crack down on organized tire and rim theft operation

Two Connecticut men allegedly connected to a large-scale rim theft operation in Hartford were arrested on Monday.

The arrests were a part of a newly formed task force looking to crack down on wheel and tire thefts throughout the Hartford and surrounding towns, according to the Hartford Police Department.

Members of the task force located Jorge Burgos, 25, and Ricardo Torres, 37, on Monday, alleged in the act of jacking up a vehicle and stealing all four rims and tires, police said. The two were taken into custody as they were moving the rims and tires to a home on Brook Street, where both resided, according to police.

Both men, who were identified as part of an alleged organized ring of similar crimes, were each charged with third-degree larceny and interfering with police. Police said Torres had three active warrants at the time of the arrest.

Two vehicles and several pieces of evidence connected to thefts were seized as part of the investigation, according to police.

Police said other individuals involved in the ring have been identified, and more arrests are expected.

The task force was formed last month and it is comprised of detectives, officers and analysts from the Investigative Services Bureau, the Community Service Bureau and the Capital City Command Center. “The task force gathered investigative intelligence, including technology support from C4, and identified a large scale, organized rim theft operation made up of multiple individuals working together in the city,” according to police.

Anyone with any information regarding the thefts are asked to contact the Hartford Police Department Tip Line at 860-722-TIPS (8477).
