Two earthquakes recorded in Northern California near Lake Tahoe: USGS

(FOX40.COM) –The United States Geological Survey said an earthquake hit Northern California on Saturday evening, and residents in El Dorado and Nevada counties may have felt the impact.

Around 8 p.m., the USGS said a magnitude 3.4 earthquake hit about five miles southeast of Dollar Point, California, a small city about four miles north of Tahoe City, four miles south of Carnelian Bay, and about 10 miles southwest of Kings Beach.

The USGS added that this earthquake was about 6 kilometers (a little over 3.5 miles) deep, and as of 8:38 p.m., was reportedly felt by nearly 100 people.

The USGS said the earthquake was about 15 miles north of South Lake Tahoe, 15 miles west of Carson City, Nevada, and 16 miles southeast of Truckee.

About an hour later, another earthquake was reported by the USGS, this one coming in at a magnitude 3.0 and a depth of 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) in almost the exact same location as the first one. As of 9:38 p.m., only four people reported feeling the second earthquake’s effects.

According to an earthquake magnitude scale, earthquakes within the magnitude range of 2.5 and 5.4 are “often felt, but only cause minor damage.”

The earthquakes come a little over a week after three earthquakes were detected near California’s most active fault system, the San Andreas fault.

No injuries have been reported.
