Two freed hostages back in Israel, military says

The two hostages released by Palestinian extremist group Hamas earlier on Saturday have returned to Israel after being handed over to the Red Cross, the Israeli military has said.

Long-term captive Avera Mengistu and Tal Shoham, who was abducted during the October 7 attacks more than 16 months ago, have arrived at a reception facility in southern Israel, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said.

They are set to undergo medical examinations before being reunited with their families, it said.

Four more Israeli hostages are to be released in the course of the day. In return, Israel is due to release a total of 602 Palestinians from prison.
