A Cincinnati doctor hopes to be Ohio’s next secretary of state.
Democrat Bryan Hambley, a cancer doctor with University of Cincinnati Health, announced this week he is running for the office, which will be vacated by Republican Frank LaRose in 2027. Hambley lives in Loveland with his family.
“Democracy works best when communities can exercise their right to be heard,” he said in a statement. “Here in Ohio, we have seen our secretary of state abuse our democracy, making it harder to vote, purging voters from the voter rolls, and drawing unfair maps that have been deemed unconstitutional time and time again. I am running because I care about Ohio, and I have seen my patients and our communities suffer from a broken and gerrymandered democracy. ”

The Warren County Democratic Party supported Hambley in the statement.
“Bryan is the first in the door and last to leave,” said party chair Kelly Sakalas. “He spent countless hours volunteering and knocking on doors supporting reproductive rights, fighting against gerrymandering and supporting Sen. Sherrod Brown.”
LaRose has served as secretary of state since 2019, overseeing elections and granting business licenses. He’ll reach the end of his two-term limit in 2027. Ohio Supreme Court Judge Jennifer Brunner was the last Democrat to be elected to the office in 2006.
Hambley is the first to throw his hat into the ring for the office, but other hopefuls still have time. Candidates must declare their bid for secretary of state by Feb. 4, 2026.
