Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot outside of the Hilton Hotel New York on Wednesday morning, CNBC reported, citing a person familiar with the matter.
Thompson, 50, was outside the hotel when he was shot in the chest and leg, according to NBC News.
UnitedHealth Group was scheduled to host an investor day at the hotel on Wednesday. The event has since been canceled, CNBC reported.

A spokesperson with the New York Police Department’s Public Information Office confirmed that a 50-year-old man was shot in midtown Manhattan at around 6:45 a.m. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead. The police spokesperson did not identify the man.
Police are investigating the shooting as a targeted attack, according to CNBC.
