A search for a person in Cape Cod Canal in Bourne continued into the afternoon on Friday, the State Police media relations department confirmed.
The U.S. Coast Guard also joined the search in the canal and in Cape Cod Bay, and were still searching as the hour approached 4 p.m., but local fire and police personnel had cleared the scene by then, according to the Bourne Fire Department.
State Police Interim Director of Media Relations Tim McGuirk said as of 5 p.m., no person had been found. Earlier in the day, a State Police helicopter unit and a dive team were dispatched to search, but McGuirk could not confirm if the person jumped from the Sagamore Bridge or was merely swimming in the canal.
“It’s unclear at this point how the person entered the water,” he said around noon Friday.
The State Police and Bourne Fire Department were on the scene from about mid morning Friday. Local fire and police responders assisting had cleared from the scene by 3:30, according to the Bourne Fire Department
The Bourne Police Department directed questions to the State Police, whose jurisdiction includes the bridge.
