When Vice President-elect JD Vance takes the oath of office next week, his wife’s former boss will swear him in.
U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh will administer the oath to Vance at the Jan. 20 inauguration, according to a spokesperson for the presidential inaugural committee. The former Ohio senator, who lives in Cincinnati and grew up in Middletown, will be inaugurated alongside President-elect Donald Trump just two years after he first joined the U.S. Senate.

Incoming second lady Usha Vance clerked for Kavanaugh when he served on the U.S. Court of Appeals’ D.C. Circuit, according to her LinkedIn profile. The clerkship came after she met her husband at Yale Law School and jumpstarted a legal career that also included a job under Chief Justice John Roberts.
Vance resigned from her position as litigator for Munger, Tolles & Olson after her husband secured the vice-presidential nomination last year.
Kavanaugh joined the Supreme Court in 2018 after a bitter confirmation process centered around Christine Blasey Ford, who accused the justice of sexual assault and testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Kavanaugh denied the allegations.
In an August interview on “Fox and Friends,” Vance described Kavanaugh as a good boss who valued decency and “hired people from all over the political spectrum.” She also said Kavanaugh’s wife provided a model for how to weather controversies and unfavorable attention from the public.
