Van goes through ice on Shawano Lake; driver was trying to deliver food person ice fishing

WESCOTT – A van fell through the ice Tuesday morning on Shawano Lake, according to the Shawano County Sheriff’s Office.

At 6:32 a.m. Tuesday, dispatchers were called about a vehicle that had gone through ice on Shawano Lake in the town of Wescott, on the north shore of the lake, directly south of the channel to Washington Lake. The driver was able to exit the vehicle and left the area on foot before officers arrived, but law enforcement eventually found the driver, the sheriff’s office said.

The driver went to Shawano Lake to deliver food to someone who was ice fishing, the sheriff’s office said.

The driver was taken to a local hospital to be evaluated. Once released, the driver was arrested on an unrelated matter and was taken to the Shawano County Jail.

According to the sheriff’s office, as of 2 p.m. Tuesday, the vehicle was still not removed from the lake, and a local tow company and the Shawano Fire Department were assisting.

The sheriff’s office said those going ice fishing should be cautious, as ice conditions can be unpredictable. You should check the ice thickness and ensure that it is at least 4 inches for safe walking, and to check the weather.
