Vehicle suspected of being involved in fatal Merced hit-and-run located, police say

A vehicle suspected to have been involved with the hit-and-run death of a 39-year-old Merced man has been located by police.

Justin Rigers was crossing East Yosemite Avenue near Cordova Avenue shortly before 9 p.m. Monday, when he was struck by an eastbound Toyota, which fled the scene, police said.

Rigers, who was not in a crosswalk, according to police reports, was then struck by a Honda Civic. The Honda driver stayed at the scene and waited for authorities, police said.

Merced Police Sgt. Nathan McKinnon said the vehicle suspected of being involved in the hit-and-run is a 2024 Toyota Tundra pickup truck which is in police custody.

“We’re getting ready to process it for physical evidence,” he said.

McKinnon said police learned there may have been some possible witnesses to the collision who left the area before police arrived. No one has been taken into custody in connection with the death.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact traffic Officer McKeeman at 209-388-7752 or traffic Officer Drees at 209-388-7809.
