FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (DC News Now) — Virginia State Police (VSP) are investigating a deadly crash involving multiple cars on Interstate 95 in Fairfax County.

VSP told DC News Now that the call for the crash, which happened on I-95 South at the 163-mile marker in the Lorton area, came in just after 1 p.m.

Two vehicles were speeding when one of them, a BMW convertible, changed lanes and struck a third car before striking a guardrail and a jersey wall, VSP stated in an update.

The driver of the BMW, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and then run over by the car it hit. The driver died at the scene.

A passenger in the vehicle – who also was not wearing a seatbelt – was partially ejected and taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

As a result, all north lanes were closed, and traffic backed up around two miles, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
