WA has the country’s third highest coffee prices; here’s how Bellingham’s shops compare

A recent study found that Washington had the third most expensive price for a cup of coffee in the country, but how do Bellingham coffee shops compare? We checked local prices to show how Bellingham coffee prices compare to the state overall, Seattle, and some neighboring cities.

Washington’s average price for a drip cup of coffee was $3.69 in 2024’s first quarter, according to a study by Toast, a restaurant POS and payroll company. Hawaii had the most expensive cup of coffee, pouring in at $4.98, followed by California at $3.88. The national average price for a cup of coffee was $3.08.

Bellingham coffee costs

Bellingham has many coffee shops, from chains to local mom-and-pop shops. Here’s how local prices compared for a 12-ounce regular drip coffee this month in Bellingham, before tax:

Starbucks: $2.65

Woods Coffee: $3.20

Camber Coffee: $4.00

Makeworth Coffee Roasters: $3.75

Hammerhead Coffee Roasters: $3.00

ROAM Coffee + Beer: $3.50

Narrative Coffee: $4.50

The average of these Bellingham coffee prices rings up at $3.51, 18 cents less than the state’s average.

How does Bellingham’s coffee prices compare to Seattle? According to a 2021 study and reporting by The Tacoma News Tribune, Seattle had the most expensive cup of coffee in the country, averaging $3.92 a cup.

If you visited Woods Coffee in Skagit County, Whatcom’s southern neighbor, you’d save 20 cents on that same 12-ounce drip coffee, although Mount Vernon’s Starbucks charged the same price.
