Wales players rip apart English rivals as Gatland turns up to witness new star score epic try

Wales stars Tomos Williams and Gareth Anscombe played starring roles in Gloucester’s dramatic 44-41 West Country derby victory over Bristol Bears in front of an on-looking Warren Gatland in the stands at Ashton Gate.

There were also impressive performances from Welsh-qualified Gloucester lock Freddie Thomas, who told WalesOnline this month his goal was to play for Wales, and former Cardiff star Max Llewellyn.

Gatland, who was with his assistant Rob Howley, will have been heartened by the performances of half-backs Williams and Anscombe, who controlled the game very well.

Williams was a constant threat with ball in hand and had a hand in two scores with his lovely chip over the top of the Bristol defence, setting Anscombe up for a try.

Dynamic lock Thomas, 22, also caught the eye with one stunning 45-metre break which resulted in a pass from Williams putting the 22-year-old over for a try. Some are calling the epic score an early contender for try of the season.

Wales international Llewellyn, who was playing out of position on the wing, also set up a try with a powerful run and well-timed offload putting Christian Wade over. This was a thrilling affair at Ashton Gate as the Cherry & Whites raced into an 18-point lead before Bristol launched a tremendous comeback to level the scores at 41-41, with Wade bagging a hat-trick for the visitors.

But a successful penalty from George Barton just two minutes from time got Gloucester over the line and eased the pressure on Gloucester head coach George Skivington. Get the latest Welsh rugby breaking news by signing up to our free daily newsletter here.

Skivington said: “Tomos, Gareth, Wadey, they have come in and they were all great tonight.

“That’s why we brought them in, they will play a part this season in driving us forward. I think the young guys are feeding off that and the whole group has bought in to what we are going to do. The leadership, the senior lads are looking good.”
