Wales snow map shows vast area will be blanketed with fast-falling wintry weather within hours

Snow is set to start falling in parts of Wales early on Saturday afternoon, according to the latest forecast from the Met Office. Two weather warnings come into force on Saturday which cover most of Wales.

There is a yellow warning for snow and ice which is in place between 12pm on Saturday and midnight on Sunday, and then an amber weather warning for snow and ice comes into force at 6pm on Saturday which will remain in place until noon on Sunday. With regard to the second and more severe warning, the Met Office has said that “travel delays on roads are likely” and that there is “a good chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services such as mobile phone coverage”, while “some rural communities could become cut off”.

If we look at the Met Office precipitation maps in detail, they highlight which parts of Wales are likely to see snowfall and when. At around 2pm, snow is expected in the Merthyr Tydfil area, spreading east towards Llandovery and Builth Wells by around 3pm. The greyer the colour, the faster the snow is set to fall.

By 4.30pm many parts of south Wales are expected to see snow, stretching into mid Wales as far as Aberystwyth and west to include Carmarthenshire and parts of Pembrokeshire. Snow is expected to fall across most of Wales later into Saturday evening, when the amber warning for snow and ice will be fully in force.

According to the Met Office things will start to change in south Wales at around midnight as rain sweeps large parts, although snow will continue to fall in mid and north Wales. By around 10am on Sunday most of Wales will be covered with rain, turning that fallen snow into sludge and potentially making the roads and pavements treacherous.

Rain is then expected to continue to fall for most of Sunday before clearing later into the evening. There are patches of snow forecast for Monday in parts of west Wales, but it will be largely dry and rain-free. According to the Met Office, the forecast for Saturday is as follows: “A dry and cold start with some hazy sunshine and bright spells through the day. Winds remain light but cloud thickening from the south into the afternoon. Rain, sleet and snow moves into the south by the evening. Maximum temperature 4°C.”

As for Saturday night: “Snow continues to moves northwards across the country overnight. Snow turns to rain by dawn but with a risk of freezing rain in places. Icy conditions expected. Minimum temperature -2°C.” As for Sunday, the forecaster says: “Freezing rain expected to continue across central and northern Wales through the morning, but turning into rain by the afternoon. Milder in the south but staying cold in the north. Maximum temperature 11 °C.”
