WAUSAU – A citizen task force charged with developing options for reconfiguring Wausau School District’s elementary education facilities will hear enrollment projections Wednesday from a demographer hired by the district.
The meeting will be held from 5:30-8 p.m. in the Nicholson Boardroom of the district’s Longfellow Administration Center at 415 Seymour St. in Wausau. The community is invited to attend.
The task force is scheduled to hear enrollment projections, information about existing building capacities and conditions and options for delivering 4-year-old kindergarten in district facilities.
The meeting is the second of nine meetings scheduled for the task force between June and December. The task force is expected to have its recommended plans ready on Dec. 4.
The task force is made up of 45 people from three different categories: parents with children in the district schools, district residents without children in the district schools and elementary educators and support staff. Notes from the first meeting indicate 27 of 45 task force members attended with parents being the largest group represented, according to Diana White, district communications coordinator.
Some members had called ahead to say they could not attend but other non-responding members have been replaced, according to White.
Demographer Mark Roffers told a Wausau Daily Herald reporter via email the first meeting accomplished its goal of task force members beginning to get to know each other, understanding how the task force will operate and beginning to learn what criteria and information the task force members will prioritize while making its choices.
“I am looking forward to sharing more information and learning from others, particularly at our two remaining summer meetings. This will include information on enrollment projections, school conditions and capacity, elementary educational programming, the district’s financial condition, and bussing,” Roffers said in the email. “Come fall, the Task Force will be suggesting, evaluating, and eventually narrowing different options for configuring the District’s elementary schools in the future.”
