You know you’re getting old when you remember well a president who hasn’t been in office for 43 years and you feel even older when you start ruminating on all the things that have passed since that man’s time in office. So, it is with the passing of Jimmy Carter, a man remembered not so much for stellar accomplishments while POTUS but more so for his stellar humanity.
Can you remember when he and his family left their motorcade and strolled up Pennsylvania Avenue during his inauguration? People of both parties applauded this as a departure from the imperial presidencies of the past (e.g., Richard Nixon). While Carter may be best remembered as fostering a “general malaise” within this country, his accomplishments on the world stage should not go unheeded — namely, the Camp David Accords and the SALT II Treaty.
In the 44 years since he was last president, I have watched this country go from a relatively intelligent and common sensical populace to a xenophobic, hysterical and intolerant lot. Science and reason are no longer respected but rather “infotainment” and conspiracy theories are the norm. It is counterproductive to continue to ruminate over what was, but it can only be wise for us all to re-embrace the values of decency, courtesy and humanity that Jimmy Carter stood for his entire life.
