A tornado watch and several severe thunderstorm warnings have been issued for the Charlotte region until Sunday afternoon as a severe storm system is expected.
The first round of storms moves west to east through the area between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. That’s when we’ll see the biggest risk for torrential downpours, gusty winds, and an isolated tornado.

Expected Timeline:
-
8-9 a.m.: A line of storms is expected to bring heavy rain to the mountains and foothills.
-
11 a.m.: Those storms are expected to move towards the metro Charlotte area. Rain will likely be heavy at times. Be on the lookout for flash flood alerts, and standing water in roadways.
-
3 p.m.: The first round of storms are expected to move out of our area. Rain and a few storms are possible behind that, but it may not be as severe due to the first round likely using most of the energy available in the atmosphere.
In total, we could see an additional 1-3″ of rain, so we could see some isolated flooding concerns in typical problem spots.
NEW: A Tornado Watch has been issued for most of our area until 1 pm this afternoon. Make sure you have a way to receive these warnings and a plan in place should one be issued where you live as these storms head our way! @wsoctv pic.twitter.com/269vNjJgzx
