Weather forecast prompts MDOT to postpone road closure by two days

LANSING — State highway officials have postponed an overnight road closure by two days because of weather.

Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard will be completely closed beneath the Interstate 96 overpass from 9 p.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday, while crews pour a new bridge deck, the Michigan Department of Transportation said.

MDOT had initially scheduled the closure to happen on Tuesday night but postponed it because heavy rain was in the forecast. A flood watch will be in effect for Tuesday night and Wednesday across the region.

Thursday’s bridge pour is part of a $44 million project to rebuild the I-96 bridges over MLK (M-99), Billwood Highway, the Grand River and South Washington Avenue. That project began last year and is scheduled to run through late 2025.
