Wet weather expected as New Year’s Eve approaches

Dec. 28—BLUEFIELD — Snow isn’t a big factor in the New Year’s Eve forecasts across the region, but rainy weather is a possibility when countdowns to the end of 2024 and the start of 2025 get underway around midnight Dec. 31.

Daytime highs going from 50 degrees to nearly 60 degrees characterize the coming week’s forecasts around Mercer County along with rain most days leading up to New Year’s Eve this coming Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg,Va.

Two weather systems are coming over the region, said meteorologist Eric Bunker. “One warm front will bring in some rain. Then we get a secondary system. It’s a little bit stronger.”

This secondary weather system comes over the Mercer County area today and goes into Sunday, Bunker said. Rain is expected Saturday night and with light showers on and off Sunday morning, but this could be followed Sunday afternoon with stronger storms and possible thunder on higher terrain.

“We are expecting some heavy rain in the area,” he said Friday evening. “Last time I looked, we do have a marginal risk for excessive rainfall in southwest West Virginia and Southwest Virginia Sunday.”

In the Mercer County area, Saturday night’s rainfall could reach up to half an inch with Sunday seeing an 80% chance of rain reaching up to three quarters of an inch, according to meteorologists in Blacksburg, Va. As of Friday, the New Year’s Eve forecast from the weather service called for a high of 53 degrees and a low of 35 with a 60% chance for rain. New Year’s Day could start 2025 off with considerably cooler temperatures with a high near 39 degrees and a low of 26 that evening.

Further north in the Raleigh County area, residents can expect fairly warm winter temperatures next week ranging from 59 degrees today and Sunday to around 53 degrees on New Year’s Eve this coming Tuesday. Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Charleston expect temperatures to drop New Year’s Day to a daytime high of 37 degrees with a 60% chance of snow followed by a nighttime low around 25 degrees with a 40% chance of snow.
