NEW YORK — Mayor Eric Adams said President-elect Donald Trump talked about how great of a mayor he is in a brief ringside conversation at a mixed martial arts fight Saturday night — the latest example of the big city Democrat’s conciliatory approach with the Republican president-elect.
“We exchanged pleasantries and I didn’t hear — it was a lot of noise. So I didn’t hear exactly what he was saying,” Adams said at a wide-ranging press conference Tuesday, when asked about the exchange.
Trump and Adams spoke for about 20 seconds at the Ultimate Fighting Championship event at Madison Square Garden — a confab captured on video by Trump-allied sportscaster Sage Steele.

“But it was something to the tune of, you know, you are one of the greatest mayors the city has ever had. The city has turned around under your leadership,” Adams continued — before joking that the “lip reader” analyzing the video missed them talking about his wins as mayor, such as “how I brought back the economy, brought back jobs, the bond rating.”
Trump has rarely been so complimentary of his hometown, calling New York “a city in decline” in May.
The video shows Adams approaching Trump’s ringside seat and chatting with the president-elect — though their conversation cannot be heard on the recording. UFC CEO Dana White stood with the pair, while members of Trump’s entourage including Elon Musk, House Speaker Mike Johnson and former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard looked on.
A mayoral spokesperson had previously told POLITICO they discussed how events like the match benefited the city’s tourism economy.

Adams said he paid for his ticket to the fight. His son Jordan Coleman and volunteer campaign fundraiser Alisa Roever also attended the fight.
The often braggadocious Adams appeared to be joking about Trump’s compliments to him, but it’s not so far-fetched.
At his October rally at Madison Square Garden, Trump pledged to make New York “safe and strong and beautiful and affordable and vibrant again” and to “work with the mayor” and the governor to do so.
People “just don’t speak well” of New York now, Trump said at the rally, but he blamed the “horrible, horrible” former Mayor Bill de Blasio and the federal government allowing migrants to come to New York, rather than Adams.

One day earlier, Adams publicly distanced himself from Democrats who highlighted that his former chief of staff called him a fascist.
While Adams and Trump share many contacts in common, they did not have a relationship themselves until an October charity dinner, when Trump expressed a kinship with Adams, who he claimed without evidence was targeted for prosecution by the Biden administration.
Then came Trump praising the “very nice” Adams at MSG. Adams has conspicuously avoided criticizing the Republican standard-bearer, which gave credence to reporting that Adams was hoping Trump could dismiss his federal charges, or grant him a pardon.
Adams again dismissed that Tuesday, saying Gov. Kathy Hochul, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and the hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” also called Trump after his win.

“Did you say, are you doing it because you want something?” he asked reporters. “How about we’re doing it because we love New York? This is the president. And it’s time for us to stop yelling at each other and working with each other.”
Adams was once eager for the praise of another president, before their relationship soured.
“I’m the Biden of Brooklyn,” Adams said ahead of a presidential visit in 2022. “I’m sure if you were to ask him what is his favorite mayor, he would clearly tell you, ‘It’s Eric.’”
