A hazardous weather outlook has been issued by the National Weather Service in Paducah for many counties in Kentucky that predicts more heavy snow and dense freezing fog.
“Dense freezing fog will also be possible, mainly over the northern half of the area,” the outlook reads. “Visibilities of a quarter mile or less and black ice will be possible.”
So what is freezing fog? Here’s what to know.
What is freezing fog? Is freezing fog dangerous?
Freezing fog is kind of exactly what it sounds like: When water vapor in the air freezes to cold surfaces.

According to NWS, supercooled liquid water droplets in fog freeze instantly on exposed surfaces when the surface temperature is at or below freezing.
You will notice freezing fog on tree branches, stairs and rails, sidewalks, roads and vehicles.
Most notably, freezing fog can cause black ice on roadways. Black ice is difficult to see, which makes it more dangerous to drivers. Drivers should be extra cautious and drive slowly while freezing fog is in the forecast or stay home if possible.
In the winter storm warning, NWS recommends travelers be aware of the road conditions.
What counties may see freezing fog?
The following Kentucky counties may see freezing fog, according to the hazardous weather outlook: Alexander, Ballard, Bollinger, Butler, Caldwell, Calloway, Cape Girardeau, Carlisle, Carter, Christian, Crittenden, Daviess, Edwards, Franklin, Fulton, Gallatin, Gibson, Graves, Hamilton, Hardin, Henderson, Hickman, Hopkins, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Livingston, Lyon, Marshall, Massac, McCracken, McLean, Mississippi, Muhlenberg, New Madrid, Pike, Pope, Posey, Pulaski, Ripley, Saline, Scott, Spencer, Stoddard, Todd, Trigg, Union, Union, Vanderburgh, Wabash, Warrick, Webster, White and Williamson.
