Brian May has revealed he had a stroke.
The music legend achieved international fame as the lead guitarist and backing vocalist in one of the biggest rock bands ever, Queen.
The 77-year-old musician spoke out about his experience in a social media video posted on Instagram on Wednesday. It was shared with his 3.3million Instagram followers, with many of them posting well wishes to the star beneath the post.
In a piece to camera, May said the experience was “a little scary” when he was temporarily unable to use his arm after he had the minor stroke. However, the songwriter took to social media to share the “good news” that he can still play guitar.
Queen’s Brian May has had a stroke
“I’m here to bring you some good news I think. The good news is that I can play guitar after the events of the last few days,” he said.
“I say this because it was in some doubt because that little health hiccup that I mentioned happened about a week ago and what they called it was a minor stroke.”
As he suffered the stroke, the Queen star was rushed to Frimley Hospital in Surrey in an ambulance. The music legend described the experience as “exciting” and he thanked the doctors for taking care of him.
He added: “All of a sudden out of the blue I didn’t have any control over this arm. It was a little scary I have to say. I had the most fantastic care and attention from Frimley Hospital. Blue lights flashing. Very exciting, I have to say. I might post you a video.”
May has been advised to take it easy. He said: “The good news is I’m doing what I’m told which is basically nothing. I’m grounded. I’m not allowed to go out. I’m not allowed to drive. I’m not allowed to go on a plane. Not allowed to raise the heart rate too high… But I’m good.”
The guitarist said he didn’t want any sympathy from people. He said: “I didn’t want to say anything at the time because I didn’t want anything surrounding, you know. I really don’t want sympathy. It will clutter up my inbox and I really don’t want that.”
Support for Brian May

Among the fans, one person wrote: “Brian, I donāt want to clutter up your inbox, so-to-speak, but I do want to say that Iām very happy to hear that youāre doing so well! We want you to stay healthy for a long, lonnnnng time to come!!! Iāll be keeping you in heart and prayer, now and throughout the days to come, dear Dr. Sir Brian May, CBE!!! Simply put, you are greatly loved, Brian!!!”

The Badgers, The Farmers and Me
Alongside the social media video about his stroke, May encouraged people to watch his new BBC Two documentary The Badgers, The Farmers and Me. In the documentary, he teamed up with farmers to look at the reasons for the spread of TB in cattle and to try to save badgers.
He wrote: “Well, I WILL leave it there for now. There are plenty of bombshells in the documentary and plenty of great new insights which, when the dust settles, will give farmers new ammunition in their personal fight against bovine TB. Every criticism that’s been levelled at us is answerable.
“And to shorten the film from 4 hours to an hour, a lot had to be left out or simplified. For anyone who’s interested to know more or discuss constructively, we WILL be founding “Save Me TB Management” – hopefully running informal workshops to make interested farmers aware of their available options to break out of the interminable misery that current TB policies have brought. Anybody who’s happy with the present situation, of course, won’t need to join us !!! Best wishes to all. – Bri.”
Saving the badgers has been a passion of the Queen star for years. Badgers are culled in a bid to reduce levels of bovine TB. The farming community are one of the biggest critics so it’s interesting the star has won them over in his new documentary.
On 21 August, the music star spoke about his documentary when he appeared on The One Show. He said: “I started off trying to save the badgers and I still am, but basically we’re trying to save the farmers now, and the cattle.
“It’s a tragedy all round, it’s a terrible, awful mess and we think we’ve made the discoveries which can in the future help those farmers solve the problems and get rid of bovine TB, stop killing the badgers, end of story. We believe we cracked it.”
