When does winter start? When is the first day of winter? A look at the winter solstice

Winter is around the corner, and Ohioans can probably expect milder temperatures than normal this year, according to the 2024-25 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s winter forecast.

Federal forecasters are still waiting to see whether La Niña, a natural climate pattern, has formed. Marked by cooler-than-average seawater in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, La Niña events happen when the northern part of the United States typically sees colder and stormier winter conditions, while it is warmer and less stormy across the south.

It’s almost time to get your furnace checked and adjust your thermostats. Here’s when the 2024 winter season occurs.

When does winter start in 2024?

The 2024 winter solstice will happen on Saturday, December 21.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the solstice is at 4:21 a.m. ET in the Northern Hemisphere. It is the day with the fewest hours of sunlight throughout the year—essentially, the “shortest day” of the year.

Contrasting other long-term forecasts, the almanac also predicts Ohio to have a wet and cold winter.

When does winter end?

Winter ends on Thursday, March 20, 2025, once the vernal equinox (Spring Equinox) begins.

Daylight savings time will already have returned by the time spring starts. Our clocks will spring forward in the early morning hours on Sunday, March 9.
