When is daylight saving time 2025? Here’s when sunset will be in NH when we spring forward

The darkest days of winter are officially behind us with sunsets again after 5 p.m. in the New England. So is daylight saving time almost here?

We will “spring forward” in just a few weeks when daylight saving time goes into effect in early March.

When is Daylight Saving Time?

Daylight saving time will begin on March 9, 2025. That day, most Americans will lose an hour of sleep when the clocks turn forward one hour at 2 a.m. When we spring forward, sunrise will be at 7:05 a.m. and sunset will be at 6:42 p.m. in Portsmouth.

What is Daylight Saving Time?

Daylight saving time is an annual time change lasting from March until November to gain more daylight in the summer evenings.

It was first enacted by the federal government in 1918 as a fuel cost-saving measure during World War I by adding an extra hour of sunlight to the day, according to the Library of Congress.

It became federal law in 1966, when it was established from the last Sunday of April through the last Sunday of October.

In 2007, daylight saving time was extended to its present form, where the clocks spring forward from the second Sunday in March through the first Sunday of November.

Some Americans dislike the biyearly time shifts, and lawmakers have made efforts in the past to change it. In 2022, the US Senate unanimously approved an act to make daylight saving time permanent, but it did not pass the House.

In December, President Donald Trump said he would put an end to daylight saving time altogether.

“The Republican Party will use its best efforts to eliminate Daylight Saving Time, which has a small but strong constituency, but shouldn’t!” Trump wrote in a Dec. 13 Truth Social post. “Daylight Saving Time is inconvenient, and very costly to our Nation.”

The 2022 attempt to make Daylight Saving Time permanent was a bi-partisan effort.

However, nothing has changed yet, so make sure to still switch your clocks on March 9.
