A single lucky ticket matched all six numbers in the Friday, Dec. 27, 2024, Mega Millions drawing to win the jackpot worth $1.22 billion, lottery officials said.

The jackpot was the fifth largest in the game’s history and the highest total of 2024, surpassing the $1.13 billion jackpot winner from New Jersey in March, according the Mega Millions lottery.

The winning ticket was sold in Cottonwood, California, which is located in the northern portion of the state. The winner of the ticket can choose between $1.22 billion annuity of the cash value of $549.7 million.

Who won the Mega Millions?

The Dec. 27 drawing alone produced 5,691,299 winning tickets across all prize tiers, in addition to the jackpot-winning ticket, lottery officials said.

Five tickets matched the five white balls to win the game’s second-tier prize; two were sold in California, and one each in Arizona, Missouri and Texas, the lottery said.

Across the U.S., 157 tickets matched four white balls plus the Mega Ball to win the game’s third-tier prize with 28 worth $30,000 each because they included the optional Megaplier option, officials said. The other 129 third-tier winning tickets take home the $10,000 each, they said.
