Gov. Tony Evers ordered Wisconsin and United States flags to be flown at half-staff Saturday in honor of former state legislator and judge Fred Kessler, who died earlier this week.
Kessler served as a member of the state Assembly for 24 years, between 1961 and 2019, stepping away to serve as a judge in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1979, he worked with Milwaukee School Board member Leon Todd to create three language immersion elementary schools in the city.
He returned to the state Assembly in 2004, and lost a reelection bid in 2018.

His daughter, Liza Kessler, said he enjoyed working behind the scenes on legislation, especially bills related to public education, civil liberties, fair housing, LGBTQ rights, freedom of speech, personal privacy and redistricting reforms.

“His fundamental value ⌠the core thing he believed in, was helping people who were not in as socially privileged of a position as he was, and and really trying to make the world a more equitable and just place,” she said.
Funeral services were to be held Saturday for Kessler. Flags are ordered to be flown at half-staff until sunset Saturday.
