Will JCPS close Monday amid possible winter weather? The latest from the district

Jefferson County Public Schools students are set to return from winter break Monday, just in time for a winter storm that meteorologists predict will bring snow, sleet and freezing rain to Louisville.

JCPS spokesperson Carolyn Callahan said the district is unsure if the weather conditions will result in cancelling the first day of classes following break, though district officials will closely monitor the forecast over the weekend and make a decision before 5 a.m. Monday.

Ahead of the storm, the National Weather Service Louisville has issued a Winter Storm Watch, which will take effect Saturday night and end Monday afternoon.

According to the bulletin, parts of central Kentucky and southern Indiana, including Louisville, could accumulate more than 4 inches of snow and sleet and more than a quarter inch of ice.

Travel is expected to be impacted as snow and ice accumulation could create slick road conditions, according to the National Weather Service. Power outages from snow and ice accumulation on trees and power lines are also a possibility, officials said.

Officials have urged residents from the areas expected to be impacted to prepare for the storm.
