Winter Storm Warning issued for heavy lake effect

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Heavy lake effect snow is likely for parts of the lakeshore Monday, with double-digit totals possible in spots.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Ottawa, Allegan and Van Buren counties until 1 a.m. Tuesday. It’s within this area that some communities could see very heavy snowfall.

Elsewhere, Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for Muskegon and Oceana from 7 a.m. Monday until 7 a.m. Tuesday, and for Kalamazoo county until early Tuesday. While lake-effect won’t be as persistent in these areas, several inches are still likely.

An intense round of lake-effect is expected through Monday night, primarily impacting parts of the lakeshore, near and south of Holland. One or two dominant bands are likely to develop, which will lead to very heavy localized totals and quick changes in visibility. While some communities will see 6-12+” by Monday night, it’s important to note that sharp cutoffs in snow amounts are likely due to the nature of lake effect.

The primary band of lake-effect is expected across western Ottawa, Allegan and Van Buren counties. Heavy snow is expected to persist along the lakeshore through parts of the day Monday, and additional accumulations are likely. The morning commute is likely to be impacted, and the evening commute may be as well.
