GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Winter weather alerts have been posted ahead of another round of lake-effect snow.

Winter storm warnings have been issued for the lakeshore from Allegan county northward from late Tuesday through Thursday evening. It’s within this area that 6 or more inches of snow is likely by late Thursday, especially under heavy lake-effect snow bands.

Elsewhere, winter weather advisories are in effect from early Wednesday through Thursday evening. While less widespread, heavy snow is expected in these areas, there will still be pockets of major travel impacts under lake-effect bands.

While the alerts run through overnight Tuesday through Thursday evening, the worst travel impacts are expected from Wednesday night through Thursday for most of the area.

Slow start to the storm

Precipitation will slowly move in Tuesday evening as a rain/snow mix. Colder air pours into West Michigan Tuesday night, shifting the precipitation fully over to snow. Pockets of moderate snow is possible near and north of Muskegon, with very light accumulations expected elsewhere.

Arctic punch Wednesday evening

Another arctic front is expected to arrive Wednesday evening, bringing a sharp temperature drop and a punch of wind. Gusts into Thursday will likely be near 40 mph. Watch for blowing snow after the front passes. Bitterly cold wind chill values are expected Thursday. Most of the day will feel like -3 to 10°.

Snow amounts will likely be higher near the lakeshore. Everyone in West Michigan will likely see 2-6 inches by Thursday evening. Areas west of 131 and north of I-94 will likely see at least 6 inches with a good chance at a foot of new snow in spots.

The wind won’t be quite as forceful as it was with the system that occurred during the first week of December, and therefore, the concern over power outages is lower. Even still, pockets of heavy snow and gusty winds will create significant impacts — especially for travel.
