Woman, 60, dies after being hit by ‘number of vehicles’ on M56 motorway

A woman has died after she was hit by a ‘number of vehicles’ on the M56 motorway.

Emergency services rushed to the motorway between junctions 10 and 11 near Warrington at around 8.25pm on Friday (October 4). Police found a pedestrian had been ‘struck by a number of vehicles’.

Sadly, the 60-year-old woman, from the Northwich area, was pronounced dead on the scene, the Liverpool Echo reports. Her loved ones have been informed and a file in relation to her death will now be passed to the coroner.

After the incident on Friday, both sides of the motorway were closed off emergency crews responded. The carriageway was shut for more than 12 hours before being reopened at around 10.30am on Saturday morning.

In a statement, a Cheshire Police spokesperson said: “At around 8.24pm on Friday 4 October, officers responded to an incident between junctions 10 and junctions 11 on the M56 motorway near to Warrington. Officers attended the scene and found that a pedestrian had been struck by a number of vehicles.

“Sadly, the 60-year-old woman from Northwich died at the scene. Her next of kin have been informed and a casefile will be prepared for the coroner. Both sides of carriageway were subsequently closed whilst officers dealt with the incident, with the junction itself remaining closed until 10.30am the following morning.”
