Women taken to hospital dies after shooting on Fayetteville Street in Durham

A woman who was shot late Sunday night near downtown Durham died at the hospital, police said.

It happened around 11:48 p.m. in the 900 block of Fayetteville Street.

ABC11, The News & Observer’s newsgathering partner, said the woman was shot outside Jack’s In and Out Mart, which is across the street from the Phoenix Square shopping center and just south of the Durham Freeway.

Officers found the woman suffering from a gunshot wound. She was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

As of Oct. 12, 182 people had been shot this year in Durham, 25 of them fatally, according to police statistics.

That is down from 32 fatal shootings by the same time in each of the previous two years, the statistics show.

Police are still investigating Sunday’s shooting and did not release the woman’s name or any suspect information.
