Wrong-way driver leads to fiery crash on I-5 near Torrey Pines

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — California Highway Patrol is investigating after a wrong-way driver on Interstate 5 caused a fiery crash near Torrey Pines Monday night.

The crash was reported around 8:16 p.m. just after the freeway’s interchange with State Route 56.

Authorities say a white Toyota Prius was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-5, south of Carmel Valley Road, when the Prius crashed head-on with a gray Toyota RAV4.

At least one of the two vehicles involved then became engulfed in flames in the righthand lane of I-5 north.

The driver of the Prius, a 38-year-old man from Carlsbad, and the driver of the RAV4, a 37-year-old man, also from Carlsbad, were taken to the hospital with major injuries.

Investigators are working to determine whether drugs or alcohol were factor in this crash.

As crews responded to the scene, three northbound lanes were placed under a hard closure for several hours. All were reopened to traffic just before 11 p.m., according to Caltrans.
