Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday welcomed an offer from his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin for direct negotiations, but insisted that a ceasefire backed by European leaders should take effect on Monday.
“It is a positive sign that the Russians have finally begun to consider ending the war,” Zelensky wrote on X. “The entire world has been waiting for this for a very long time. And the very first step in truly ending any war is a ceasefire.”
The Ukrainian leader said “there is no point in continuing the killing even for a single day.”
“We expect Russia to confirm a ceasefire – full, lasting, and reliable – starting tomorrow,” he added.
On Saturday, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, visited Kiev.
Together with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, they called for a 30-day ceasefire without preconditions, set to commence on Monday. The proposal has been backed by the US.
Putin responded by calling for direct negotiations with Ukraine in Turkey on Thursday, but he did not respond to the ceasefire demand.
