£1,000 fine warning for drivers flying St George’s Cross

Football fans are being warned that they could face fines of up to £1,000 or points on their driving licence if they fail to adhere to rules about flying the England flag. The St George’s Cross is often seen adorning cars, particularly on match days across the country.

However, some drivers may not be aware of crucial regulations regarding these flags. If a flag is displayed in such a way that it could obstruct a driver’s view, then the motorist could find themselves in hot water.

Any flag that is put up must not block the driver’s sight of any windows or rear-view mirrors, as this could lead to road accidents. The flag could also obstruct other drivers’ views or cause an unnecessary distraction for other road users.

Police have the authority to remove it and issue fines or points if they deem the flag to be unsafe, reports the Express. In some instances, any of the above offences could result in a fine of up to £1,000, or potentially three points on your licence. Before the laws were relaxed in 2010, it was possible to receive a fine of up to £2,500 for a flag-related mishap.

For those wishing to display the flag on their properties, there is no need for planning permission. As long as the flag is within the homeowner’s boundaries, it can be displayed. However, if a flag partially blocks a neighbour’s windows, residents have the right to request its removal.

If the homeowner refuses, neighbours have the right to report them to the local planning enforcement officer.
