Ben Shephard was quick to step in during the latest episode of This Morning when co-host Cat Deeley broke down in tears. The pair were back at the helm of the ITV daytime show on Thursday (April 25) when they were joined by a guest who spoke about his late dog saving his life.

Ben and Cat, who started as the permanent hosts of This Morning last month, were interviewing Kerry Irving about his late springer spaniel Max, who saved his life after Kerry fell into a depression following a car accident.

But as Kerry joined the new presenting duo live on the sofa, mum-of-two Cat started to well up as she remembered her beloved pet dog, Lilly, who sadly passed away last year.

Cat kept wiping away tears before composing herself with the guest also left emotional as she remembered her late pet pooch Max, who sadly passed away in 2022 aged 14. Kerry adopted Max in 2008 after becoming seriously injured in a traffic collision two years earlier and suffering with severe depression.

Photos of Max out on his walks quickly became popular on social media and the dog became an Internet sensation, helping to raise nearly £300,000 for a number of charities, including PDSA. Max even won the animal equivalent of an OBE and has been immortalised in statue form in their hometown of Keswick, Cumbria.

Cat got very emotional as she introduced the guest, saying: “In 2022, Max sadly passed away at the age of 14 but his legacy lives on, Kerry’s fundraising continues” to which her voice broke, she added tearfully: “We were talking about dogs in the break. Er, he’s got the spaniels…”

But as she struggled to get her words out, she told Ben: “Carry on, you read…” Ben then took over as he introduced Kerry and his dogs and revealed Kerry has released another book, Forever Max, which is celebrating Max. Ben then explained Cat’s tears, saying: “The reason Cat is getting upset is because the idea of losing a dog, you lost a dog you still think about all the time.”

Later during the interview, Kerry got emotional too as he said to Cat: “We’re not going to cry, are we Cat” to which the host insisted: “No, I’m definitely not going to do that!”

Cat previously announced the passing of her beloved dog Lilly on Instagram in September last year, saying: “To our sweet Lilly… Thank you for being the best companion there ever was [heart emoji] Oh how we’ll miss you,” penned the presenter, before including a quote from author Dean Koontz about the “unbearable price” of loving a dog.

“Dogs’ lives are short, too short, but you know that going in,” it read. “You know the pain is coming, you’re going to lose a dog, and there’s going to be great anguish, so you live fully in the moment with her, never fail to share her joy or delight in her innocence, because you can’t support the illusion that a dog can be your lifelong companion. There’s such beauty in the hard honesty of that, in accepting and giving love while always aware that it comes with an unbearable price.”
