Brits fume at public toilets costing 50p – but there’s simple way to get in for free

For years, the mere thought of forking out 20p to access public toilets has been a source of annoyance for many Brits.

But now, it appears a new 50p charge is pushing some to their limits – this was highlighted when a Reddit user pointed out an issue at a set of public toilets. The user posted a photo of the toilet block on Reddit’s CasualUK subreddit, humorously commenting: “The people vs 50p toilets.”

A notice from Windermere and Bowness Town Council affixed to the door states: “The 50p entry to our 6 public conveniences goes fully towards covering the cost of the cleaning and maintenance contract.”

Next to the door is a contactless payment device, offering the chance to use your debit or credit card, or Apple Pay, to pay the fee.

One Reddit user criticised: “They need the 50p to pay for the card machine they installed so people could pay the 50p by card.”

Another quipped: “The cost of s****ing crisis is about to hit Britain.” A third expressed frustration: “Should never have to pay for a basic human right. Ridiculous. Rip the thing off the wall.”

And someone else, clearly exasperated, said: “As someone with IBS, the very concept of paying to use toilets is incredibly infuriating to me. Public toilets is exactly the kind of thing our taxes should pay for.”

However, sharp-eyed Reddit users noticed a cunning ploy one local had used to bypass the fee. A closer look at the door reveals a large stick wedged to keep the door open, allowing free access.

The clever trick was a hit with onlookers. “Your contribution keeps these toilets open and someone has contributed an extremely effective stick,” one observer joked.

Another remarked: “Took me way too long to find the stick at first. I’d be annoyed if I paid and only realised it was there afterwards.”

Meanwhile, another person grumbled: “You know there is going to be that one Karen that will remove the stick – then complains why they need to pay to use the toilet.”

However, some voiced their willingness to pay for a clean loo. “I honestly don’t mind paying for a toilet if it’s clean,” commented a Reddit user, adding, “The stench in the free ones makes me want to barf. It’s one of life’s small luxuries I don’t mind paying for.”
